The effects of nutrition on health

'Lifestyle related' illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, allergies and asthma are a growing problem. Whether specific diets can help to reduce these chronic diseases is an important research question, a question that we at the Louis Bolk Institute intend to answer. Our research on nutrition is commissioned by government agencies, health related charities and private foundations.

Our nutrition research

We use cohort and diet intervention studies to determine whether specific foods can help prevent or alleviate chronic illnesses such as eczema and asthma. In this research we are particularly interested in the specific effects of organic and unprocessed foods. We also coordinate the Bio Quality Assurance (Biokap) residue monitoring project for the organic sector. The Biokap project has been initiated and designed in collaboration with VBP, the Dutch trade association of organic agrifood businesses.

Systems approach leads to useful advice

We are in a unique position to study the relationship between diet and health, thanks to our combined expertise in agricultural research and health care studies. Our systems approach enables us to take a broad view on the relationship between diet and health. Our research results can be directly translated into practical advice.
