Titel in Nederlands: Hevige phytophthora-uitbraak 2016 benadrukt noodzaak resistente rassen

Abstract / samenvatting in Nederlands:

Title in English: Severe Phytophthora outbreak in 2016 highlights the need for resistant varieties

Abstract / summary in English:

In 2016, organic potato production in the Netherlands suffered greatly from a severe outbreak of Phytophthora infestans. Due to persistent rain in June and July many growers were forced to burn the foliage of infected potatoes early in the season. In combination with the relatively late planting date this resulted in a (too) low yield of susceptible potato varieties for many growers. "This outcome highlights, yet again, the need for resistant varieties," say Edith Lammerts van Bueren, Ronald Hutten and Christel Engelen of the Bioimpuls project. In this project, researchers and growers are working hard to develop new resistant potato varieties.
