Abstract / samenvatting in Nederlands:

Title in English: Soil fertility and nutrient cycling: avoiding soil compaction is crucial

Abstract / summary in English:

In the project Vruchtbare Kringloop ("The fruits of nutrient cycling") 250 farmers in the Dutch province of Gelderland are optimizing the nutrient use efficiency of their farms using the Annual Nutrient CyCling Assessment, a simple calculation tool to quantify nutrient cycles at farm level. Soil quality plays an important role in optimizing nutrient use: by increasing soil nitrogen use efficiency by 20 percent, farmers can increase farm-level nitrogen use efficiency by 10 percent. This article discusses the main challenges in managing soil quality in grasslands, based on results of the BodemConditieScore (a soil quality index).
