Organic cocoa Ivory Coast
Sustainable cocoa production improves livelihood of farmers in Ivory Coast
Two farmers cooperations will start the production of organic cocoa in order to improve the livelihood of more than 2.400 people. The project is financed by Progreso Foundation (the Netherlands) and will be executed by Agro Eco-Louis Bolk Institute (Ghana). The major goal is to build the capacity of the farmers and teach them Good Agricultural and Management Practices. They will also set up an Internal Control and Treacing System and prepare themselves for organic and fair trade certification."The big advantage of this approach is the emphasis on the capacity building focus: the project will be self sustained and self-managed", project leader Willem-Albert Toose explains. "By the end of the project, the farmers will be able to sell their organic produce at a global market. This is in our opinion sustainable development."
