Sustainable Agriculture Alliance

The Louis Bolk Institute submitting partner

Self-development, empowerment, women's rights and sustainability. These key concepts are leading in the new proposal "Sustainable solutions for energy, agriculture and education: A Northern alliance for supporting action in the South". An Alliance of six development organisations from the Netherlands presented this proposal to the Ministry of Development Cooperation, last December. The Louis Bolk Institute is one of the submitting partners.

The overall objective is to improve the livelihood of citizens by increasing their empowerment in the 18 poorest countries of the world, like Uganda, Bolivia and India. All six organisations have a well developed track record of successful development projects in the South. A joint programme is therefore an important improvement of the impact of their work.
ETC Foundation is the leading agency, and next to the Louis Bolk Institute, Edukans, Heifer Netherlands, ILEIA Foundation, and RUAF Foundation are partners. Cooperation through Civil Society Organisations in the South will ensure a stable implementation of the new initiatives and plans.

Spearheads in sustainable agriculture, energy access and education

The Sustainable Agriculture and Regional Food Systems sub-programme is meant for small-scale rural and urban farmers, men and women. It's ambition is to empower them to produce sustainable food at affordable prices focusing on local and regional food markets. Within this programme, the Louis Bolk Institute will especially focus on market development.

The Energy Access for the Poor sub-programme enables the access of poor and marginalised communities to sustainable modern energy services to improve their livelihoods.

The Technical and Vocational Education and Training sub-programme improves the quality and relevance of technical and vocational education and training as a crucial contribution to developing labour markets and economies.

The combination of expertise in the fields of agriculture, energy and technical and vocational training through the three sub-programmes allows to launch initiatives on cross-cutting themes such as the use of bio fuels, adaptation to climate change and up-scaling learning processes.
