Advice based on 'Development through trade' approach
Stimulating development through supporting sustainable fair trade: this is the Louis Bolk Institute's approach. Creating markets for sustainable products and ensuring product quality requires broad expertise. Not only on sustainable agriculture, soil conservation and disease prevention, but also on trade in tropical products. The Louis Bolk Institute has exactly this expertise. Thanks to our advice on for example value chain development, we help to make 'development through trade' a reality.Local and international expertise
We have local staff and offices in Ghana and Uganda. Our main office in Driebergen works closely together with our African staff, keeping them up to date on the latest scientific insights into sustainable farming methods. Our combination of local and international expertise is unique: In Africa we work with local farmers to promote ecologically and socially sustainable production of, for instance, cocoa, honey and cotton. Meanwhile, in the Netherlands, we keep track of relevant market developments through our international network.Sustainable honey production
In Sierra Leone, cocoa yields were declining. We provided training on the significance of honey bees for pollination, and advised farmers on how to make better use of honeybees in their cropping systems. As a result, cocoa yields have improved significantly. Moreover, cocoa farmers now have an additional product to sell: sustainably produced honey.Would you like to more?
