Organic Goat Meat Network

Demonstration project organic goat meat

The Dutch Organic Goat Meat Network is a good example of a demonstration project. Goat breeders, butchers, restaurant owners and researchers work together in this network to improve the sales potential of organic goat meat, a new product on the Dutch market. Organic goat farmers raise the kid goats themselves, rather than exporting the animals to Southern Europe. Producing for local and regional markets is after all one of the basic principles of organic agriculture. The success of the demonstration project depends on pioneers willing to take new steps together.

Goat meat appeals to Slow Food fans and culinary pioneers

The goat meat network is coached by Louis Bolk Institute. One of the project objectives is increasing consumer interest. Trend watcher Anneke Ammerlaan was asked to determine which target groups would be most open to eating goat meat. It appears that these are mostly 'foodies': well educated baby-boomers and people in their thirties who love food and culinary adventures. The project has also launched a website www.geitenvlees.com(in Dutch) that provides a clear overview of sales outlets, recipes, and restaurants serving goat meat.

This project is an excellent example of innovation realized by the sector itself. The project is funded by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation EL&I and runs until December 2010.
