Evaluation Sierra Leone
Evalutions to validate projects
The project "Support to Vulnerable Communities for Sustainable Improvement of Food Security in Sierra Leone" (2007-2010) was funded by the European Union and implemented by the French organisation Inter Aide. Advisors of the AgroEco-Louis Bolk Institute were asked to carry out an external final evaluation (May-July 2010). This was an obligatory phase in the project in order to validate the project achiements. In general, it is always useful for donors and funding agencies to know if projects have met their expectations.The objectives of the project in the Bombali District were ambitious:
- supporting farmers to increase and diversify their agricultural production while protecting the natural resources;
- providing a sustainable access to safe water and sanitation, and
- reinforcing the organisational capacities of the target groups.
Valuable recommendations for clients
Our advisors assessed, among others, the project methodology, the sustainability and the impact of the project. Overall, they concluded that the methodology of Inter Aide is one of the best to motivate a community. Their main recommendations for the future include a.o:- the project approach of low input and high level of own responsability is very useful, but needs more time for an effective implementation;
- the gender sensitive approach is good, but it appeared that the women empowerment was insufficient. Including successful women as role models in project activities is one example of a valuable improvement.
